Word of the Day: Truffery

There are things, places, people, ideas important today, that in time, will be truffery. We opened a safety deposit box in 1999. We paid $50 per year to put our most valuable items in safekeeping. You know, the important things. The things that if our house burned down, or we died, needed saving. Somewhere around 2005 our bank closed the location which housed our safety deposit box. So we went to retrieve the "important documents" and items in the box. We honestly, had no idea what was in there.

So we retrieved, a few items appropriately placed. A couple of birth certificates, our will, some coins, appraisals on our wedding rings. But 90% of the contents of the box had absolutely zero value. All of the receipts for Christmas in 1999. A receipt for a vacuum cleaner that had long since literally "bit the dust". A receipt for a TV that we didn't own any longer. Receipts for bras from Victoria's Secret. Why would I EVER think these needed to be kept for safekeeping? Would I ever file an insurance claim on stolen lingerie? I'm sure they were just in the pile of Christmas receipts and so they all went in. The baby with the bathwater.

One moment busy at your computer, ticking off tasks that are super important. Deadlines and obligations. Responsibilities. Then the pink slip. In one instant... those "to-dos" are done. Air. Complete. No longer your problem. Priorities only moments before that filled the dance card for the day, vaporized to ether.

I wonder on this day. Which moments mattered, & which ones were misplaced? Did I put items in the safety deposit box that should have been discarded?. Did I casually throw away moments that were gilded?
